Lava is a liquid block. It can emit light in dark places, like in a cave. It can not be acquired in survival mode, only found in creative mode.
In random generated worlds, lava is common. With water, it can form springs, which are technically ravines, filled with those fluids and some other blocks.
Lava can be used as a light source.
